Cappadocia travel guide: everything you need to know

How to plan Cappadocia well: where to stay, when balloons fly, what things cost and how to move between the valleys.

Start with the right base

Göreme is the easiest first base if you want walkability, cave hotels and balloon views. Uçhisar is quieter and more panoramic; Ürgüp is better for wine, comfort and polished restaurants; Avanos is best for pottery and a calmer riverside pace.

Balloons, weather and timing

Tourist balloon flights are normally scheduled around sunrise because the air is usually calmer then. Kapadokya SHM publishes a same-day operational window and flight-area status, so check the balloon status source before relying on a flight. Book your first morning to leave backup days.

Costs and practical planning

Treat all prices as estimates. Standard shared balloon flights often sit around €120–€250 outside winter, while museum entries, transfers and restaurant costs change frequently. Confirm current prices with the provider before paying. Two to three full days cover the icons; four or five days give you room for valleys, underground cities, Avanos and slower meals.
